Applies to: All PLACE models (PL1AS, PL1K, PL1N, PL1G)
Your PLACE device includes motion detection that can send you push notifications when movement is detected in the room. This is useful for monitoring spaces when you’re away from home or keeping an eye on specific areas of your house.
How Security Motion Detection Works
When you enable the Motion button on your device’s home screen, the device monitors for movement in the room. When motion is detected, you receive a push notification on your phone alerting you to the activity.
Enabling Motion Detection
To turn on motion detection:
- Open the PLACE app and go to the home screen
- Find the device you want to monitor
- Tap the Motion button to enable it
The button will show as “on” when motion detection is active. You can tap it again anytime to disable motion detection.
What You’ll Receive
When motion is detected:
You will receive a push notification on your phone indicating which device detected motion and when. The motion will also appear in the Events section in the app.
When to Use Motion Detection
Security motion detection is most useful when:
Monitoring unoccupied spaces - Keep tabs on rooms that should be empty, like a guest bedroom or office when you’re away.
Home security - Get alerts if someone enters your home while you’re out.
Checking on specific areas - Monitor a garage, nursery, or other room for activity.
Tracking patterns - Understand when and how often spaces are being used.
When You Might Not Want Motion Detection
There are situations where you may want to disable motion detection:
High-traffic areas during the day - If the device is in a busy hallway or living room, you’ll get constant notifications that aren’t useful.
When you’re home - You probably don’t need alerts about your own movement through the house.
Rooms with pets - Animals can trigger motion detection frequently, leading to notification overload.
Privacy concerns - You may not want motion monitoring active in bedrooms or bathrooms.
Many users enable motion detection selectively - turning it on when they leave home and off when they return, or only enabling it on certain devices in less-frequented areas.
Motion Detection Settings
Motion detection can be configured independently for each device. You don’t need to enable it on all your PLACE devices - choose which ones make sense for monitoring based on their location and your needs.
Each device has its own Motion button on the home screen and its device screen, so you can have motion detection active on your Garage model while leaving it off on your bedroom devices.
Common Questions
Q: Will I get notifications every time motion is detected? A: When motion detection is enabled, you will receive a push notification for every motion event. Events will also be logged in each device’s Event log.
Q: Can I adjust motion sensitivity? A: Motion sensitivity settings are available in each device’s settings.
Q: Does motion detection work during power outages? A: No, motion detection requires AC power and WiFi connectivity. During battery backup operation, the device focuses on essential safety detection only.
Q: How is this different from the motion-activated night light? A: These are completely separate features. The Motion button on the home screen controls security notifications. The motion-activated night light is controlled in the Night Light Settings screen and turns the light on when motion is detected. You can use one, both, or neither.
Q: Will motion detection drain my battery faster? A: Motion detection runs when the device has AC power. During battery operation (power outages), motion detection is disabled to conserve battery for safety features.
Q: Can I see a history of motion events? A: Yes, motion events are logged in the Events screen of the app when Motion is enabled.
