Applies to: PLACE Nursery (PL1N) and Garage (PL1G) models
The built-in intercom lets you communicate instantly through your PLACE device from anywhere - across the house or across the country. Speak through your phone and hear responses in real time, without entering the room or interrupting what you’re doing.
Why the Intercom Matters
The intercom turns your PLACE device into a communication hub for situations where being there in person isn’t practical or safe. Parents can soothe a crying child from another room without fully waking them by entering. You can communicate with someone working in the garage without walking out there. During emergencies, you can give instructions or check on family members without entering potentially hazardous spaces.
How to Use the Intercom
Open the PLACE mobile app and select your Nursery or Garage device. Start the live video feed - the intercom works through the video interface. To speak, press and hold the microphone button on your screen. Your voice transmits through the device’s speaker into the room. Release the button to listen for responses through your phone.
The intercom is push-to-talk, so you control when you’re speaking versus listening. This prevents echo and feedback while ensuring clear communication both directions. Make sure your phone app has microphone permissions enabled - the app will prompt you if permissions need adjustment.
Important Limitations
You can only initiate intercom communication from the mobile app to the PLACE device, not the other way around. Someone in the room cannot press the device to talk to your phone - it’s one-directional initiation. There’s also no intercom between multiple PLACE devices. If you want to communicate between rooms, you’ll need to use the app to connect to each device separately.
The intercom requires AC power and Wi-Fi connectivity. During power outages when the device runs on battery backup, the intercom function is disabled to preserve battery life for critical safety features.
Practical Use Cases
For parents: Soothe infants without entering and risking fully waking them. Remind children about bedtime routines. Check if your teenager is actually awake for school without multiple trips upstairs.
For garage communication: Coordinate with someone working on a project. Warn before operating the garage door. Communicate with contractors or delivery personnel. Check on unusual sounds or activity without leaving the house.
For elderly care: Check on aging parents or relatives who spend time in monitored rooms. Provide reminders about medications or appointments. Offer reassurance during storms or overnight.
For pet owners: Comfort anxious pets with your voice when you’re away from home. Check on pet behavior if the camera shows unusual activity. Give verbal commands to trained animals.
Privacy Considerations
The intercom only works when you actively initiate the connection through the app. The device doesn’t passively transmit audio from the room unless you’ve opened the intercom function. Anyone in the room can see and hear when you’re using the intercom via the red glowing indicator light on the corner of the device - there’s no covert listening feature.
