Applies to: All PLACE models with night light capability (PL1AS, PL1K, PL1N, PL1G)
Your PLACE device includes a smart nightlight that can be controlled manually or set to turn on automatically based on motion or ambient light conditions. Here’s how the night light settings work.
Night Light Settings Screen
To access night light settings, open your device settings and go to the Night Light Settings screen. You’ll find controls for:
Color - Choose a warm, cool, or neutral tone for the night light.
Brightness - Adjust how bright the light glows when on.
Ambient Light - When enabled, the night light automatically turns off when the room is bright enough based on the device’s light sensor.
Motion Detection - When enabled, the night light automatically turns on for 30 seconds when motion is detected at night or in low-light conditions. It won’t trigger during daytime or bright conditions.
Motion Detection and Ambient Light are mutually exclusive - you can use one or the other, but not both. These represent different automation strategies for controlling when the light is on or off.
Night Light Button on Home Screen
The Night Light button on your device’s home screen shows the current status of the light (on or off) and lets you manually toggle it. This button provides real-time status and manual override control - you can tap it anytime to turn the light on or off, regardless of your automation settings.
If motion detection is enabled and the light is currently off, the button will show “off” until motion triggers the light, then it updates to “on” for 30 seconds. You don’t need to manually turn on the night light for motion activation to work - the automation handles it.
Setting Up Motion-Activated Night Light
To enable automatic motion-activated lighting:
- Open your device settings and go to the Night Light Settings screen
- Enable the Motion Detection toggle
- Adjust Color and Brightness to your preference
- Note: the Ambient Light toggle should automatically be disabled when turning on Motion Detection
Now when motion is detected at night or in low light, the night light turns on for 30 seconds at your chosen settings, then turns off automatically.
Not the Same as Security Motion Detection
Your device’s home screen also has a Motion button that controls security motion detection - this sends push notifications when movement is detected in the room. This is a completely separate feature from the night light’s motion detection.
The Motion button on the home screen has nothing to do with motion-activated night light. You can turn off the home screen Motion button entirely and your motion-activated night light will still work fine. The motion-activated night light is controlled only by the Motion Detection toggle in the Night Light Settings screen.
Common Questions
Q: Can I use motion detection and ambient light control at the same time? A: No, they’re mutually exclusive. Choose one automation strategy or the other.
Q: How long does the motion-activated light stay on? A: 30 seconds after motion is detected. This duration is currently fixed.
Q: Does the Night Light button on the home screen need to show “on” for motion activation to work? A: No. The home screen button just shows current status and provides manual override. Motion detection will turn the light on automatically when triggered.
Q: How long does the Night Light stay on if I manually turn the night light “on” via the button on the Home or Device screen? A: The night light will stay on indefinitely when turned on manually. You must turn it “off” via the buttons in the app, or by tapping the TEST button on the device. This will return the night light to the settings you have configured in the Night Light Settings screen (ie, ambient, motion, or neither).
Q: Will the motion-activated night light work during power outages? A: No, the night light requires AC power and is disabled during battery backup operation to conserve battery life for essential safety detection.
